Laser Hair Removal
For woman and men unwanted hair can be an annoying, if not embarrassing, nuisance. While some people are just naturally hairy, others suffer from disorders such as hirsutism, or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), both of which are known causes of unwanted hair in women that can be devastating. In fact, unwanted hair can be an emotionally painful drain on one's self confidence.
Unwanted hair has traditionally been something you just had to deal with or learn to accept. Methods for removal were uncomfortable, inconvenient and expensive — and temporary at best.
But now, with the remarkable advances in laser technology, you can have unwanted hair removed safely, comfortably, and affordably — provided the laser used in the treatment is the alexandrite wavelength, which is appropriate for permanent hair removal (not all lasers deliver the same wavelength). The alexandrite wavelength, which is FDA-approved, is the most effective method for hair removal because it can achieve desired results with the fewest treatments (and conveniently, the treatments are the greatest distance apart; about 8 weeks).
The success of the alexandrite laser is credited to two factors, that:
- the alexandrite wavelength travels to the target depth, the depth where the follicle is. In other words, to remove hair permanently, the energy must be able to reach the target, which is the follicle, the "root" of the hair. If the energy cannot reach the target depth, then you are wasting your money.
- a simple law of physics that dark pigments absorb light (light colors reflect it); light energy is attracted and absorbed by the dark pigmentation of the hair in the follicle.
By combining these two factors, the result is concentrated light energy being absorbed by the hair at the target, each time decommissioning a considerable percentage of follicles. The treatment is profound enough that roughly 5 weeks will pass before any of the surviving follicles can begin re-growing hair. Ergo, fewer treatments, greatest time span apart.
Hair can be removed permanently on any area of the body — upper lip, face, neck, underarms, back, shoulders, bikini, buttocks, legs — anywhere.
Imagine no longer shaving your legs or underarms - ever. Imagine hair that you've grown to live with, such as on your back or sides, being gone forever. You'll forget that it was ever there!
How we Remove Hair Permanently
At Atlantic Laser Clinic we use the Candela GentleLASE 755nm alexandrite laser, Candela's premier laser for removing hair. The GentleLASE treats all skin types quickly, comfortably, and effectively. And only Candela lasers feature the Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD™) to maximize patient safety and comfort for a virtually painless treatment.
We also offer a free consultation to every patient. Typically in this consultation all of your questions are answered and most of our patients have their first treatment on the same day. Treatments can last as short as 15 minutes for facial area and up to 45 minutes for back or legs area. Depending on your personal needs, most areas of treatment need between three to six treatments. The treatments are spaced out between six to eight weeks. However, you only pay for treatments as you receive them (unless your desire is to pay in advance).
Types of hair - Vellus, Accelerated Vellus, and Terminal
The number of follicles is the same for both females and males. Each of us is born with the same number of follicles at birth and they remain with us throughout life. Just because a follicle is present, however, doesn't mean it has a hair in it. While some follicles are active (producing hair), others are dormant and may not produce a hair until later in life.
Vellus, Accelerated Vellus, and Terminal are the three types of hair on your body, regardless of whether you're a man or a woman.
Vellus hair is short, soft, fine, and typically un-pigmented. Most woman have vellus hair on their abdomen, arms, legs, and face.
Accelerated vellus are vellus hairs that—because of a malfunction that may be related to stress, medication, diet, pregnancy or menstruation, or disease (e.g., PCOS, or hirsutism, as mentioned earlier on this page), or other life-altering conditions—move down into the follicle (from the sebaceous gland) and are activated as new terminal hair.
Terminal hair is the dark (pigmented), coarse hair that has a structured root system. It can grow to any length (depending on a number of biological factors), and unless it is on top of the head, or on a man's face, it can be the bane of one's self esteem and confidence .This is the hair that we see on our bodies that we don't want. This is the hair that people traditionally tweeze/pluck, clip, shave, wax, or even use electrolysis. We use the Alexandrite laser wavelength to target terminal hair to make follicles incapable of producing hair.
The laser leaves no ingrown hairs, no inflamed follicles. Just smooth, hair-free skin.
